Vanessa Simmons says MTV’s “Run’s House” is all real, baby

Just found this: yoraps.com interviewed Vanessa Simmons in January.

V sez that Run’s House is not “The Hills” (the “reality” TV show known for its fake scripted drama) — she says there’s no scripts on Run’s House and it’s “all natural”.

Vanessa also says that she and Angela are writing a book. This is not real surprising, given practically her whole family has published at least one book if not more. The Simmons authors include dad Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, stepmom Justine Simmons, uncle Russell Simmons and ex-auntie Kimora Lee Simmons.

What’s new with yours and Angela’s Pastry label?

We’re still working on it and it’s going to expand into clothing, jewelry, more sneakers and bags. There’s also a Valentine’s set with sneakers and a bag coming out in February.

I saw the episode of Run’s House where you both came up with the concept. Will you be filming another series of the show?

We’re just starting to do Season 5 which is exciting.

How much of what happens is natural or is it based loosely on a script?

It’s all real life situations and things that have happened to us. It’s all natural.

You set up a successful business. What would you say to others wanting to do the same thing?

To not be discouraged by people saying ‘no’. My whole motto is to expect a no but never accept a no. You can take peoples’ criticisms but you have to keep pushing forward and believe in your project. If you believe then others will start to believe and everything will flourish from there. If you put your passion and good energy behind it then it’s going to happen. Nothing comes overnight.

Do you sometimes feel any pressure to live up to the success of your dad [Rev Run] and your uncle [Russell Simmons]?

It’s definitely pushed me and Angela to be entrepreneurs looking at our dad and uncle and all of the things that they do. It compels us to keep pushing and keep coming with good things that we love doing. They inspire us and me and Angela would love to be able to encourage other people to go out there and own their own businesses as well.

Do you ask your dad for a lot of advice?

I ask him for advice all the time and he is constantly giving out advice at the same time. He wants to see me and Angela succeed so much. It’s great being able to have such great people around us. Our mom encourages all day as well. We have very supportive parents and we’re lucky and blessed to have that.

How do you feel about being a role model for young girls out there?

I love being able to be that person that people can look up to. I feel that one day at a time one person can make a difference and that’s what Angela and I are doing. I want to make a difference.

What about young celebrities out there, without naming names, who are doing things they shouldn’t be like drugs?

I don’t feel that it’s my place to say what anybody’s doing. There are a lot of people doing these things. What I try to do is stay focused on what I love doing so I can stay out of all of that. But that’s not to say I don’t go out with my friends because I see my friends, I laugh and I have fun. Then I bring it home and focus on the work and what I want to be doing with my life. I think it’s very sad to see such young people in those kinds of positions but everything in life is an experience and I hope that they all learn lessons out of it.

I read somewhere that you’re backing Obama for president?

I think it’s great that he’s going out there and he’s a candidate. He’s got peoples’ ears and minds. I also support Hilary Clinton, it’s a tough call. They are two very good candidates. I think they both offer such great platforms for America and if there’s anyone I’d like to see in office it’s either one of them. I go back and forth all the time, I think they are two fantastic people for the job and it’s going to be a hard decision when election time comes. Obama is really out there representing and I support that 100%. I never thought I’d have such a hard time deciding on who should be the next president.

What would you say to young people approaching voting age?

I encourage young people to vote. I’ve been registered to vote since I turned 18. Your voice does matter and a lot of people don’t realize that. People just think they’re one person but each vote matters. Get involved and see what’s going on. You have the choice to say who you want. Getting registered and voting is so important and I feel that young people should know that. Everyone wants to complain but here’s where you have your chance to change things. I’m glad that there’s a lot of interest surrounding this election.

You’re an actress, a model, an entrepreneur. What else might you want to add to that list?

Angela and I are writing a book for young women so hopefully you can add author to the list. It’s going to be about young women knowing about their bodies, boys, careers and dreams and following through with things. All of that good fun stuff!
